"Spirituality and Healing in Clinical Practice: A Biopsychosocial and Spiritual Perspective"
PHIL SHAPIRO, MD
Dr. Shapiro is the author of “Healing Power: 10 Steps to Pain Management and Spiritual Evolution”.
If we receive our medication, surgery, or natural remedy and are still in pain, there are a variety of psychosocial and spiritual methods that can help us manage that pain skillfully. To this end, Dr. Phil Shapiro created Healing Power, a self-help, self-healing model for healthcare professionals, patients, and consumers. Healing Power has fifteen methods, one hundred qualities, wisdom pearls, and a variety of religious traction devices --- the best of the best, a highlight reel of sorts—extracted from great spiritual books, teachers, and masters and translated into spiritually-oriented, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and contemplative practices.
“Healing Power” outlines a path of healing and recovery from beginning to mastery. It defines the importance of unconditional love in the healing process. Here you will find the wisdoms of the sages, translated into universal methods we can use in healthcare. These are your choices. You can go as far as you wish using this cafeteria of options for deeper healing.
Dr. Shapiro’s model lights a fire of hope and possibility under traditional medical practice. It allows us to function under the umbrella of a great idea: bringing the wisdom of the sages to health care and the street. It spiritualizes the practice of medicine by infusing it with a story and a soul. It improves healthcare outcomes.
“The Therapeutic Alliance and the Cultivation of Resilience”
RAYMOND DIAZ, ND
This presentation will define the therapeutic alliance and discuss how to maintain and cultivate it as Naturopathic Physicians. Included will be a description of the benefits of the therapeutic alliance, how we as physicians can get in the way of creating that alliance, and how we can reengage both the client/patient and doctor relationship to allow both to be in a therapeutic alliance. The cultivation of resilience will be addressed as an aspect of the fostering of the therapeutic alliance.
This presentation will include lecture, structured exercises, and question and answer.
"The Treatment of Physical Symptomology From a Psychospiritual Perspective"
HILARY FARBEROW STUART, ND
This presentation will focus on the integration of the psychospiritual into the treatment of physical disease, and the incorporation of that new understanding into a clinical practice. When we approach physical symptomology from a multi-dimensional perspective we see the expression of disease in a different way than when approached only from a "get rid of it" perspective. The physical manifestation of symptomology, when understood from a psychological and spiritual view, can be a form of communication of many different sorts - from emotions that occurred from past trauma to the feelings we do not allow ourselves to acknowledge or speak, to long-held beliefs which no longer serve us. The ability to access the deeper meaning being expressed in the physical allows us to identify etiology at root cause, and enables healing to occur from the spiritual level when we not only understand but "make friends with" the parts of ourselves that have remained hidden and misunderstood.
This presentation will include an experiential exercise where students will work in dyads to explore a simple method of accessing psychological and spiritual information from the physical level.
